Reddit's adult content promoters filter, what the help pages say it does

Reddit's help centre describes the adult content promoters filter as "an optional community safety setting that helps moderators keep their safe-for-work communities free from unwanted sexualizing or adult content promotion". It works by "identifying when a user who likely promotes adult content is posting or commenting in your community and filtering their content to either Needs Review or Removed, depending on your filter selections".

The mechanism is the point for anyone who promotes a creator account. The article states: "This tool does not filter based on the post content, but instead on the user behavior of the account posting the content." A post that breaks no rule in the community can still be held if the account behind it promotes adult content elsewhere on Reddit.

Moderators find it under Safety filters in mod tools, need the Manage Settings permission, and choose one of two thresholds. The moderate setting "will filter less users with more precision". The high setting "will filter more users, but with potentially less precision, which might mean there are some users whose content gets filtered even though they aren't an adult content promoter". Filtered items appear in the mod queue with the label Adult Content Promoter. Approved users are exempt.

The dates come from the changelog of 7 May 2026, under "Keeping SFW communities SFW": "The filter launched in early April on all platforms and the ability to exempt approved users was added on April 30." The same entry says the filter can be set to cover posts, comments, or both.

What is not published: how Reddit decides that an account "likely promotes adult content", whether an affected user is told, and whether the filter is on by default anywhere. The help article describes the setting as optional and does not answer the other two.
